About the eSecurity Framework Project

The eSecurity Framework project developed a framework in which Universities can collaborate with each other at low cost and low risk.

This project has achieved its aim of investigating a number of activities to assist in deploying a PKI aligned with Shibboleth and Grid technologies for the sector, while considering options to minimise PKI uptake costs by the sector. Outcomes achieved during this project will assist in deploying the Australian Access Federation.

During the course of this project it was identified that further negotiations and liaison with the vendors is required in order to include the AusCERT Root Certificate into their browsers. This work cannot be concluded until the Australian Access Federation PKI production is rolled out.

The eSecurity Framework project built on the existing CAUDIT PKI and MAMS projects to establish a Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) for the University and Research Sector, based on the standards developed in the existing project, and developed a pilot federation which leverages the PKI infrastructure in aligning the trust arrangements between institutions to support the implementation of Shibboleth across the sector. It also sought to lower the barriers of entry to PKI using open source software. The outcomes from this project may enable the secure sharing of resources and research infrastructure across the domestic sector and with international partners through the Australian Access Federation.

Further information regarding this project's achievements is available in the eSecurity Framework for Research Project Report.

In order to implement the actions recommended in the eSecurity Project Report, without applying for additional funding, we sought approval from DEST to extend the project, and to carry the project remaining funds forward into the 2008 budget period.

DEST has approved this request and has indicated that the Australian Access Federation SC should have oversight of this additional phase of the project, due to its outcomes importance to the AAF project.

The eSecurity Framework is a project funded by the Australian Government's Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST). The funding has been provided through the Systemic Infrastructure Initiative (SII) as part of the Government's Backing Australia's Ability - Building Our Future Through Science and Innovation. eSecurity Framework is part of the Managed Environment for Research Repository Infrastructure (MERRI) programme of projects.
